Ravens Defeat Chargers in Harbaugh Brothers' Reunion Showdown

 

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh continued his perfect record against his brother, Jim, as the Ravens triumphed over the Los Angeles Chargers 30-23 on Monday night. John extended his unbeaten streak to 3-0 over Jim, thanks in part to bold coaching decisions and another stellar performance from quarterback Lamar Jackson.

With the win, the Ravens (8-4) moved to within half a game of the AFC North-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (8-3).

Promising trend: The Ravens’ run game continues to thrive, with running back Derrick Henry contributing 140 yards on 24 carries. This marked the 9th win in 10 games for Baltimore when Henry runs for 15 or more carries. Despite not scoring a touchdown for the first time in 12 games, Henry remains a key part of the Ravens' offense. His 140-yard performance made him just the second player to rush for over 100 yards against the Chargers this season.

Eye-popping stat: One of the game’s most pivotal moments came late in the first half when the Ravens gambled on a fourth-and-1 deep in their own territory. Tight end Mark Andrews took a direct snap and surged ahead for a conversion. It was the first such fourth-down conversion that deep in the first half since the 2012 Rams, who achieved a similar feat against Jim Harbaugh's 49ers. Four plays later, Jackson connected with Rashod Bateman for a 40-yard touchdown, giving the Ravens their first lead at 14-10.

Two-word description: Never panic. Trailing 10-0 early in the second quarter, Jackson orchestrated five consecutive scoring drives, including four touchdowns, against a Chargers defense that had allowed only 14.5 points per game and had yet to give up 30 points in a game this season. The Ravens’ comeback marked their fourth win of the season after trailing by 10 points, the most in the league this year.

Los Angeles Chargers (7-4)
After a strong 7-3 start to the season, the Chargers' receiving corps had become a point of optimism. First-round rookie Quentin Johnston, along with rookie Ladd McConkey and veteran Joshua Palmer, had been instrumental in the team’s offense. However, that progress faltered on Monday night. Down by seven with just under 5 minutes left in the game, Herbert hit a wide-open Johnston, but the rookie dropped the pass, killing a promising drive. Moments later, Ravens running back Justice Hill sprinted 51 yards for a touchdown, effectively sealing the win.

Troubling trend: The Chargers' struggles to score in the second half continued. Entering Monday's game, they averaged just 8.2 points per second half, the third-lowest in the NFL. The Ravens outscored them 16-3 after halftime, and although Gus Edwards added a late score, the Chargers' offense was unable to overcome the deficit.

Hole in game plan: The Chargers’ defense was unable to stop the run, allowing 212 rushing yards, their most allowed in a game this season. This was also the first time in Jim Harbaugh's career as an NFL head coach that his team gave up 200+ rushing yards in a game.

Prediction for next week: With running back J.K. Dobbins nursing a knee injury, Gus Edwards may see an increased role in the backfield, potentially recording his first 100-yard game of the season when the Chargers face the Atlanta Falcons next Sunday.
